Some progress on this. I can now get the machine to reliably hang instead of
having "black screen followed by a reboot in after a few seconds". My system has
SATA drives, with modules loaded from initrd. There seems to be a timing issue
with doing do_resume before the SCSI disks become visible to the kernel.
When I placed "sleep 10" into my init script inside initrd, just before
do_resume, I was able to see disks being detected and the box froze every time.
Next, I'll try reducing number of modules loaded...
PS. For your reference, hardware is Dell Inspiron 6400 with Intel 945 graphics.
