My experience has been that supend/resume reliability varies a lot
from one nvidia driver version to the next. I had the issue you
describe with at least one of the 169.xx series, but a newer release
(178.xx, I think?) seems to have fixed that, knock on wood.
Try downloading the newest driver bundle from
http://nvnews.net ...
but do save your current ones first, in case it makes things worse.
Any nvidia drivers bundled with a Linux distribution are likely out of
date.
